Message from the Editor: Monsoon Submissions

To all our budding writers! Here is a message from our editor:

Monsoon Quarterly is the (recently rebranded!) magazine from the College of Asia and the Pacific @ ANU. We’re going through some exciting changes and are seeking a team to write for Issue One. The theme is ‘Spice’, have a peek at the flyer and see what section suits you best to write for, and do drop us a line if you’re interested. Submissions are due on the 22nd April. We also are eager to take photographic submissions and illustrations from those of you more artistically inclined than us.

Also remember to check out Monsoon Magazine’s very own Facebook Page! https://www.facebook.com/monsoonquarterly

First Year Camp Review

Our CAPSS First-Year Representative Alex tells us all bout her experience at the CAP first year camp for 2013!

*************************************************************************************************

The CAP first year camp is a must for all newbies! You make so many new friends that you wouldn’t have otherwise. You get to have inside jokes that others don’t understand, like ‘Dirty Debbie’. You actually learn things about your degree and majors from people who have done it before you. And there was a mentor present for most languages and majors (the ratio was nearly 50/50 between mentors and students) that could answer any question or try to assure you that ISAP B is much better than A.

This year’s camp was in the middle of nowhere really (just a bit out of Canberra), where the stars were bright and kangaroos were hopping around. We did archery, tested our teamwork during the obstacle course, played lots of games (how many times was mafia played?), ate good food (astonishing really. I’ve never had good camp food before), tested our knowledge in an epic trivia battle whilst wearing costumes (Heloise, your costume was pretty awesome) and sung songs around the camp-fire while roasting marshmallows to name a few things. It’s one of those camps that ‘you had to be there’ for.

Thank you Ashley and Nick for organizing and successfully pulling off the camp. Thank you mentors for giving up your weekend and time making presentations. Thank you everyone for such a good camp. It truly was an amazing weekend.

Welcome to CAPSS 2013!

To all of our members,

Welcome to 2013!

Congratulations to the Pip Clark’s 2012 executive committee on a most successful year.  Events were well attended and three wonderful issues of Monsoon were published.  However, the 2013 executive committee fully intend to better your accomplishments. (oooh snap.)

We have plans for 2013 that are so big, big things will look smaller by comparison.  Continuing the success that was the Year In Asia Information Night, we’ll be ensuring you are informed about application processes and scholarships as you go into or begin to think about your Year in Asia.

Spicing up staple events, a fantastic new take on the annual Lunar Ball is coming up, as are more collaboration with other Asia clubs and societies.  But shhh!  The plans are still secret. 😉

Website resources are also getting a reboot with plans to beef up the resources section of our website.  We plan to be the go-to place for your questions or problems with courses, language learning and degree structures as well as the Year in Asia.  For that, we also need YOU to contribute!  Are there any websites you found useful for language learning or answering tricky cultural questions?  Email us at capss@anu.edu.au and tell us what sort of things you’d like to see included.

We are also planning to offer brand new CAPSS T-shirts and other fun stuff!  (All sporting our new sexy logo of course.)  So look out for our committee members modeling the new exclusive merchandise at the 2013 Market Day stall!

We’re your society and we want your input.  Get involved and contact us by email or liking the CAPSS facebook page!

Beloved members, best of luck for 2013!

Héloïse Hocart

CAPSS President

Ordinary General Meeting

Dear Members,

Just a reminder that our Ordinary General Meeting will be held at 6pm in the Ethel Tory Centre (in the Baldessein Precinct Building) on Monday 27th February.

We have a few small adjustments to the Constitution to make, as well as filling the positions of First Year Representative and Marketing and Sponsorship Officer. If you would like to nominate yourself for either of these positions, please email the APSS by midnight Sunday 26th February.
Keep the date: Our Trivia Night will be on Thursday 8th March at 6pm at UniPub! Tickets are $5 for members ($10 for nonmembers). There will be great prizes, and it is a good chance to get to know others doing your degree or studying your language!

Of course, new members will be able to sign up at both these events!

Over and out!

Pip Clark, President
