APSS MOVIE NIGHT IS HERE!

Dear members,

Hope you all had a good teaching break! While we know that you are all busy cramming for upcoming exams, it’s important to remember to still have fun. Take a break from your studies this Thursday and join us at the Haydon Allen Tank for a movie night of fun. The APSS will be showing a double feature of the South Korean film Hello Schoolgirl (Hangul: 순정만화) followed by the Taiwanese film Pinoy Sunday. Both films are foreign language and will be shown with English subtitles. This is going to be a free screening for members (so if you aren’t one bring $2 to join) but we will be serving sushi for an extra $2.

About the Movies:
Hello Schoolgirl: Kwon Yeon-woo is a thirty year old low-level civil servant who works in a district office; quite innocent for his age, he has been on numerous blind dates in an unsuccessful bid to find a wife. After moving into a new place, he begins to encounter a high school girl, Soo-yeong, on his way to work every morning, and she begins to develop feelings for him. Meanwhile, Kang Sook has just started working at the district office straight out of high school, and falls head over heels for older woman Kwon Ha-kyeong. Ok so I realize the premise of this film is a little bit creepy but I have it on good authority that it is actually a very sweet film, which convincingly and effectively explores the unconventional relationships that form between the characters.

Pinoy Sunday: On their only day off, Filipino migrant workers, MANUEL and DADO discover a couch left behind on a Taipei sidewalk. In a life where everything is arranged and all possessions belong to the factory, the couch represents a chance to own something of their own. Aware that carrying a heavy piece of furniture across town is both ridiculous and illogical, the journey becomes an important metaphor for their attempt to make an unpleasant factory dorm that much more like a home. The arduous walk across the landscape is also an internal struggle —a journey that challenges notions of manhood, friendships and family.

If you want to come along here’s what you need to know:
Date: Thursday 14th October
Location: HA Tank
Arrive: 6pm for a 6:30 start.
Hello Schoolgirl runs for 113 mins and Pinoy Sunday runs for 85 mins. There will be a short break between movies.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
